Make sure you stop by the tent and say hello and learn more about The First Tee of Hawaii!
More than 70% of chapter participants return to our programs. And 90% of our alumni say they’re lifelong golfers. How have we hooked them on the sport of golf? What keeps them coming back? Golf is fun!
5 WAYS WE MAKE GOLF FUN
1. FRIENDS & SOCIAL EXPERIENCES
Kids participate as a class where they meet others from all walks of life. They’re even taught how to properly introduce themselves to each other to help break down barriers and start having fun together! Many participants find lifelong friends [like alumni Kyle DiGiacobbe and Beau Zastrow] through The First Tee.
2. WE’RE OUTSIDE
It’s rare you’ll find us in the classroom. We are in the business of doing, not telling. Participants are taught the game of golf through experience based learning, out on the golf course or driving range. The First Tee life skills, Nine Core Values or Nine Healthy Habits are taught through games and activities. Speaking of games….
3. CREATIVE GAMES
Ever heard of zoo golf or golf tic-tac-toe? You probably have if you’re involved with The First Tee! Our coaches come up with fun and exciting games to introduce golf concepts to kids. In fact, you’ll often see foam noodles and hula hoops during a lesson.
4. FUN GOLF COACHES
Our coaches are fun! They care about kids and through required training through our Coach Program, they understand how to keep kids attention. Our golf coaches are experts in making young people feel comfortable and assure they have a positive, non-intimidating experience.
Summer is almost here, which means you may be wondering how to fill your child’s time while school is out. This summer, consider an activity that keeps your child active while learning values and life skills that will help them at school and at home: GOLF.
HERE ARE 5 REASONS YOUR KIDS SHOULD LEARN GOLF THIS SUMMER:
1. YOUR KID WILL HAVE FUN
Golf looks different at The First Tee. Kids participate in group classes where they meet others from all walks of life. And they don’t start off by playing 18-holes, which can be really intimidating for a beginner. Our trained coaches come up with fun and creative games to introduce golf concepts to kids. Not convinced? Just wait until your kid plays golf tic-tac-toe!
2. ANYONE CAN PLAY
To a kid, golf may seem like a sport only older people play, but that’s only because golf is a lifelong sport. Imagine playing a game you love and can play forever. We offer youth golf programs to youth ages 7 to 18, no matter their background or experience. Worried about affording the game? The average cost per 6-week session is $72. And chapters offer financial aid, so no kid is ever turned away.
3. MORE TIME OUTSIDE
Studies1 show that kids are spending less time outside these days. At The First Tee, you’ll rarely find us in the classroom. We are in the business of doing, not telling. Increased sports activities lead to improved cognitive and academic skills2, which is why participants are taught the game of golf through experience-based learning, out on the golf course or driving range.
4. LEARN MORE THAN A GOLF SWING
You know that “experience-based learning” we were just talking about? Well, that isn’t just to teach kids the basics of golf. While learning the fundamentals of a golf swing, The First Tee’s character education programs provide a fun, active environment to teach kids how to manage emotions, resolve conflicts, communicate, set goals and much more. They will learn about The First Tee life skills, Nine Core Values and the Nine Healthy Habits.
5. GOLF IS MORE EXCITING THAN EVER
Ask anyone who watches golf today, the game still has a few surprises up its sleeve. A large part due to the return of Tiger Woods and many other PGA TOUR players who are defying the odds. The First Tee has a few surprises too, as we offer many exciting national events for kids who progress through our program, including an event played at Pebble Beach!
So why not pick up the game this summer? You may just end up achieving greatness.

“Golf is expensive.”
“Golf is boring.”
“Golf is slow.”
“Golf is hard to learn.”
How many times have your heard these misconceptions about golf? You may have even thought them yourself.
At The First Tee of Hawaii, golf is more than a game. And it’s a fun activity that can last your child a lifetime. Here are 10 things you need to know about not only the game itself, but how The First Tee does golf!
1. WHO CAN PLAY?
Anyone! The First Tee chapters welcome youth of all backgrounds and abilities ages 7–17. All we ask is that they come with an open mind and positive attitude, and we’ll provide the rest.
2. FINANCIAL CONCERNS?
No worries—most chapters offer full scholarships or reduced sessions.
3. WHAT ABOUT GOLF EQUIPMENT?
We have that, too. Most chapters provide golf clubs, balls and tees.
4. WHAT TO WEAR?
You can wear tennis shoes, shorts, or skirts—no need for special golf attire.
5. WHERE DO I JOIN?
We’re closer than you think. The First Tee chapters offer programs at more than 1,200 locations across the country. If your ready now, Register Now!
6. ARE YOUR COACHES QUALIFIED?
Definitely! We have more than 2,900 active coaches who have gone through extensive training provided by The First Tee’s certified national trainers.
7. WHAT ABOUT GIRLS GOLF?
Golf isn’t a boy’s club at The First Tee. Many chapters offer the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Program.
8. IS IT FUN?
Absolutely. The First Tee lessons are activity-based and full of fun and energy! We modify traditional sports that kids might be more familiar with—such as baseball, football, bowling and tennis—to incorporate the four basic golf shots: putt, chip, pitch and full swing.
9. WHAT ELSE?
A lot! Remember that in addition to learning the life long game of golf, kids are making friends, learning communication skills, how to set goals and other life skills that will help them on and off the golf course.
10. IS THERE A FUN FACT?
Did you know our chief executive officer, Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., is the son of former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis? When Joe Louis wasn’t in the boxing ring, he was often on the golf course.
OUR PROGRAM
At The First Tee Hawaii, we encourage youth to dream big and practice effective goal-setting techniques they can use for life. From aces to triple bogeys, golf is a perfect platform for helping kids and teens develop character as it closely parallels real life. Just like in life, junior golfers experience the highs and lows of the game.
Our curriculum was developed by experts in the field of positive youth development and is delivered by coaches trained through The First Tee Coach Program. Our mission is to help prepare kids and teens of all backgrounds for success in school, at home and in their community.
